The deployment of twelve grid scale systems for ten different customers in seven states, customized to each customer’s unique requirements, gives us an unmatched level of experience within our industry. The Xtreme Power team has never missed a commercial operation date in any of our 77 MW of installed systems — and successfully commissioned 43 MW of integrated energy storage systems on time and on budget in the fourth quarter of 2012 alone.

South Pole Telescope

In collaboration with several centers of higher education, the University of Chicago chose Xtreme Power’s energy storage system to power the 200-ton South Pole Telescope’s scan cycles without infringing on the station’s life support system. The Telescope requires up to 259,200 cycles per month.

Texas Engineering Experiment Station

In early 2007, the Texas State Energy Conservation Office engaged the Texas Engineering Experiment Station and Xtreme Power to develop and install hybrid microgrid systems for underserved communities along the Texas-Mexico border. The 7 total systems were commissioned in three phases over the course of three years and each utilize Xtreme Power’s energy storage technology to deliver 24 hour power to dwellings that are not grid connected and provide significant savings in fuel by allowing power generation at highly efficient operating conditions.

Kaheawa Wind Power I

The first utility-scale Xtreme Power energy storage system is installed on a 30 MW wind farm on Maui’s 80-200 MW grid. This system demonstrated the ability to smooth generation output to ±100 kW/min and control ramps to ±1 MW/min, mitigating the wind variability.

Lanai Sustainability Research

Initially, Lanai Sustainability Research’s 1.2 MW solar farm was curtailed to 600 kW, due to grid stability concerns for the 4 MW island grid. Since the implementation Xtreme Power’s energy storage system, which can control the ramp to ±360 kW/min, the curtailment limit has been lifted and the solar facility is currently operating at its fully rated capacity.

Ford Motor Company – Michigan Assembly Plant

Ford selected Xtreme Power’s energy storage system to operate with one of the largest solar power generation systems in Michigan. The system contributes to the plant’s estimated annual energy savings of $160,000 by shaving peak demands, leveling load, and reliably integrating 500 kW of solar PV to the critical plant loads.

Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) I

The Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative purchased their first Xtreme Power energy storage system to provide fast acting grid support services such as frequency response and voltage support to the island’s 70 MW grid.

Xcel & SolarTAC

This Xtreme Power energy storage system is collecting operational data on the integration of energy storage and solar energy systems at the Solar Technology Acceleration Center. Xcel Energy is testing a variety of different control modes to evaluate the benefits of adding storage to a distribution system with high levels of solar generation.

Kaheawa Wind Power II

Building upon the success of the Kaheawa Wind Power I project, this Xtreme Power energy storage system performs ramp control on a 21 MW wind farm on the island of Maui. In addition, this system provides the Maui Electric Company (MECO) with responsive reserves and grid support services such as frequency and voltage regulation.

Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) II & III

After acquiring an additional 6 MW of solar PV on the island of Kaua’i, KIUC contacted Xtreme Power again to implement a 3 MW energy storage system to firm the solar generation and provide frequency response for the island grid. This second unit is configured to synchronize with KIUC’s first Xtreme Power installation, thus expanding upon the energy storage system’s scalability.

Duke Energy - Notrees Wind Farm

Duke Energy matched a $22 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to install an energy storage system capable of storing electricity produced by their 153 MW Notrees wind farm. After due diligence, Duke Energy chose Xtreme Power to design, install and operate the largest battery storage system in the world integrated with a wind farm.

Kodiak Electric Cooperative

Kodiak Electric Cooperative employed Xtreme Power’s 3.0 MW energy storage system to improve grid stability in tandem with its Pillar Mountain Wind Project expansion. The fast acting and accurate frequency response service delivered by the Xtreme Power system allows KEC to increase wind penetration and reduce diesel fuel consumption without sacrificing grid stability.

Invenergy

Xtreme Power’s RPM Series™ energy storage system, located at Invenergy’s Grand Ridge Wind project site, supplies clean, renewable power to the new frequency regulation market administered by regional transmission organization PJM. The RPM is a vital asset that utilizes leading battery technology and enables Invenergy to help balance supply and demand in the PJM market.

Southern Plains Electric Cooperative, CCET

The PEAK Series system installed at the Reece Technology Center near Lubbock, TX is part of a DOE smart grid demonstration project analyzing the benefits of using energy storage for wind energy integration.
